IS VICTORY FOR TEXAS KIDS
Below is a statement from Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie on the cancellation of the State's $899 million contract with Texas Access Alliance, which is led by Bermuda-based outsourcing firm Accenture. The contract transferred administration of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to private call centers, resulting in a dramatic decline in CHIP enrollment and renewal:
"I applaud Democrats in the Texas Legislature, who have led the fight to restore critical funding for CHIP, cut through the restrictive red tape and get necessary health care to hundreds of thousands of Texas children in need.
Under the Republican's watch, far too many Texas parents have been left to depend on Nyquil and prayer for health insurance because their children were unfairly denied CHIP coverage. In addition to egregious cuts in CHIP funding, Republicans have wasted millions of taxpayer dollars on dysfunctional private call centers run by a foreign tax-dodging corporation.
Ending the privatization of CHIP is a step in the right direction for the thousands of Texas children who have been unfairly booted off the rolls, but it is also a step that should have been taken long before now."
