Richie: Civil Rights Act Changed the Course of America’s History

Below is a statement from Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie commemorating the 43rd Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964:

"It was 43 years ago today that President Lyndon Johnson signed into law one of the most monumental pieces of legislation in America's history.  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed the course of our country's future by outlawing discrimination and segregation in schools, workplaces and public venues.  Its passage was a culmination of the blood, sweat and tears shed by multiple generations of Americans, who were determined to establish the principle of equality as a given in our nation.

But as we reflect on the significance of this momentous occasion, we must also remember the struggles that many people still face in the fight for true equality.  Unfortunately, there are those in the Republican Party who seek to bring back the days of Jim Crow laws and poll taxes.  Republicans in both Texas and Washington have run roughshod over rights that many people take for granted with their discriminatory voter denial bills that are designed to strip certain groups of people of their constitutional rights.

I am proud to be a member of a Democratic Party that remains dedicated to fulfilling the ideals of the Civil Rights Act and fighting the kind discrimination that stands in the way of America's progress and prosperity.  Following in the footsteps of great civic leaders like Barbara Jordan, Martin Luther King and Lyndon Johnson, Texas Democrats are committed to protecting the right of every Texan to have their voice heard."
