Texas Democrats Take Real Action to Protect the Environment

(Austin, TX) - Today, the Texas Democratic Party, along with the Texas Environmental Democrats and other community volunteers, reaffirmed their commitment to protecting our environment by sponsoring a clean-up effort at the Blunn Creek Nature Preserve in Austin.   As part of the Democratic National Committee's "Annual Democratic Reunion," volunteers across Texas and the country participated in local community service projects to improve the environment, conserve energy and protect our natural resources.  The Reunion is a nationwide effort to connect with Democrats in every state in preparation for the 2008 election

"From ignoring an eminent global warming crisis to repealing critical environmental protection measures, Republicans have failed to address the growing number of threats to our planet's future," said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie. "Texas Democrats are working to ensure our children and grandchildren grow up in a world with clean air, safe drinking water and affordable utility bills, and we will promote policies that achieve these goals."

After living under President Bush and his rubberstamp Republican Congress, Texans are now paying more at the gas pump while oil companies post record profits, a severe global warming crisis is looming and critical environmental protections in the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts have been rolled back to protect corporate profits.  Democrats in Congress are addressing these problems and recently introduced a bold Energy Independence Day initiative that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, while creating new jobs and addressing the global warming.

"Today, Texas Democrats are taking real action to preserve our planet and protect its natural resources for future generations," added Richie. "With the Blunn Creek preservation project, the TDP is following in the foot steps of great Texas leaders like Lady Bird Johnson, who recognized our responsibility to leave this planet a more beautiful place than when we arrived."

The Blunn Creek Nature Preserve is a scenic, 40-acre habitat that features a number of fossils and spectacular geological formations.  One of Austin's few inner-city nature preserves, Blunn Creek is also home to many species of urban wildlife and migratory birds.
